“My first time meeting Beibei was during the recording sessions for Disney’s 2020 live action remake of Mulan. Our production team had worked with a number of traditional Chinese musicians with varying levels of sight reading and improvisation abilities, and when Beibei started playing we immediately knew she was on another level! We liked her sound so much that we brought her back for a second session later in the process. Of all the Chinese musicians featured on Harry Gregson-Williams score, Beibei got the most “screen time” in terms of how much of the material ended up in the final film…I was so personally moved by her musicianship that I featured her as a special guest on my most recent film socre, Harbor from the Holocaust, which tells the story of 20,000 Jewish refugees who survived World War II in Shanghai. Beibei can be heard alongside Yo-Yo Ma and Jewish musicians Niv Ashkenazi and Rabbi Avram Mlotek, and her delicate sound permeates the score as a Chinese counterweight to all the traditional Jewish references in the film.” – Chad Cannon, Composer/ Founder & Director, Asia / America New Music Institute (AANMI)
